The Ruhr University Alliance is further expanding its cross-campus collaboration in key future-oriented fields: with the new research communities focused on education, sustainability, and diversity, the three partner universities—Ruhr University Bochum, Dortmund Technical University, and the University of Duisburg-Essen—have established platforms for intensive exchange and the strategic development of joint research priorities. The communities receive financial support through a Mercur structural grant.

The Research Community Diversity and Society—initiated by Prof. Aladin El-Mafaalani (TU Dortmund), Prof. Isolde Karle (Ruhr University Bochum), and Prof. Nicolle Pfaff (University of Duisburg-Essen)—brings together 18 university faculty members from the humanities, social sciences, and education to advance diversity research across multiple institutions. The focus is on analyzing social, cultural, and institutional forms of diversity and their significance for participation, recognition, and justice in a society of migration. Thematic topics range from educational equity, migration, inclusion, and religious diversity to the examination of discrimination, racism, hate, and social polarization. Gender studies, a long-standing priority of the UA Ruhr, plays a central role in this context. The community builds on existing international networks and, through new formats such as the “Certificate Program in Diversity and Gender,” also strengthens the integration of the topic into teaching.

Further information on the Research Communities can be found on the TU Dortmund University website.
