Information about studying

What can you expect?

In the Master's degree program, you will study 6 modules in the (elective) compulsory area as well as the module for the Master's thesis. The modules are divided in such a way that approx. 30 credit points must be earned per semester.

  • Methodological specializations: Master sociologists are prepared in detail for upcoming empirical Master's theses, e.g. through the research workshop and research design courses.
  • Internationality: Score with English skills? The second supervision of the Master's thesis can also be carried out by colleagues at foreign universities - perhaps this can even be combined with a shorter stay abroad? We support you in this!
  • Relationship to the BA Sociology programme: Students who have previously studied BA Sociology at TU Dortmund University will recognize some fields of social change. There are links to these in the Master's program, but no duplication. This makes it clear that the Master's is attractive for both "old Dortmunders" and "new Dortmunders"!

 

Prerequisite for enrollment

...is a successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in Sociology, in comparable degree programs such as Bachelor of Arts Social Sciences or in related degree programs such as Social and Cultural Sciences. In some cases, missing requirements can be fulfilled parallel to the MA course. We will be happy to advise you on which requirements must be met.

By the way: A certain grade point average is not required for the BA degree.

 

Occupational and professional fields

The Master's degree course opens up a wide range of career prospects in research and practice. It is important to have an individual profile or to develop one! There is no such thing as "the sociologist". During your studies, you can develop your own profile by choosing courses or topics for your (final) theses.

The following possible fields of work then await you:

  • (Further) in research: at universities, universities of applied sciences, vocational and technical academies or non-university research institutes.
  • Nothing works without media anymore: whether social media (internet, online media or smartphone apps) or 'traditional' media (e.g. radio and television stations etc.): the impact and importance of media is undisputed.
  • What few people usually think of when they hear 'sociology': culture and sport (e.g. adult education, public relations).
  • Where sociologists are becoming increasingly important: private companies! Hardly any company can do without sociologists, be it in personnel/organizational development, corporate marketing/public relations, foreign correspondence or consulting/evaluation and quality and diversity management.
  • Not only the pandemic has shown: organizations in the social sector and politics need sociologists, e.g. in quality management in healthcare, in international charities or in urban development.
