Dortmund entered the race for the iCapital Award this year with the title "INNOVATION NEXT DOOR - Future from the Neighbourhood", presenting the city's innovation model with its wide range of social, sustainable and technology-oriented projects and strategic approaches. Among them are two projects of the Social Research Centre. One is iResilience: Social innovations and smart city infrastructures for the resilient city of the future (iRes, funded by the BMBF programme Zukunftsstadt) and T-Factor: Participatory Futures - Co-creating cities with temporary urbanism (funded by an EU Horizon2020 Innovation Action).

iResilience aims to develop and test climate prevention measures and new practices, as well as technologies for the continuous improvement of urban climate resilience in two neighbourhoods in Dortmund. Together with local actors, solutions are developed that better address the challenges of climate change. Focus topics are heat and health, heavy rain prevention and urban green. This is done together with the residents of the neighbourhoods, local businesses, the City’s administration and civic initiatives in Dortmund.

T-Factor is aimed at unlocking the transformative potential of temporary use in urban regeneration. It gathers a unique coalition between cities, universities, businesses and grassroot organizations, committed to creating new knowledge, tools and approaches to temporary urbanism that can contribute to inclusive and thriving futures in cities. They work across advanced and early stage regeneration initiatives in Europe and beyond, one of which being Dortmund, making the most of international knowledge exchange and creative collaboration to trigger strategic policy-making, innovative research and practice in this emerging field.
