The new EU project is researching sustainable steel production and considers people and technology together.
The European research project "SUPER - sustainable future steel production and people recruiting and skilling" was launched this summer. The international consortium, in which TU Dortmund University's Social Research Center (sfs) is involved, is looking at the key challenges facing the steel industry on the road to climate neutrality. As an industry with high greenhouse gas emissions, the sector needs to drive decarbonization while dealing with an ageing workforce and difficulties in recruiting young employees. Rather than addressing these challenges separately, the project creates synergies by looking at technological progress together with talent development across industries, disciplines and regions.

At the heart of the project is a training and recruitment program that will take place in Gliwice, Poland. The participants will visit three steelworks, a steel research institute and a metallurgy museum and discuss topics such as career paths in the steel industry in working groups. The focus will be on challenges such as the shortage of skilled workers, the changes brought about by digitalization and the image of the industry. In addition, the project partners involved will record the status quo of technological development, identify decarbonization scenarios and gain an overview of existing recruitment and qualification activities.
