Prof. Dr. Ursula Schumm-Garling was Professor of Sociology at the University of Dortmund from 1973 until her retirement in 2003. From 1981 to 1984, she was also director of the long-established Social Research Center Dortmund, which was then a state institute and is now a scientific institution in the new Faculty of Social Sciences at the TU Dortmund University.
